Deep Freshwater Wells
Countrywide, Zambia

Many Zambians suffer from water-born diseases due to the lack of clean drinking water. The Caris Foundation has partnered with several organizations to provide a long-term solution to this problem. First, Caris funded a portable drilling rig that was shipped from the US to Zambia by Healing Hands International, based out of Nashville, Tennessee. Then Caris provided funds for the training of a local crew from the Namwianga Mission, a Zambian group that operates various educational and vocational schools. As of Spring, 2007, the crew has drilled five deep, freshwater wells in rural areas throughout the country, and they continue to drill more. One of the problems encountered in this area is a granite shelf that makes drilling difficult, so Caris continues to search for solutions that will make drilling more efficient and provide clean water to as many as possible.
