Every year when the rainy season comes to Zambia, the Zambezi River floods its banks and isolates the western province for several months. This remote region has the highest level of poverty in the country, and its inaccessibility prevents many inhabitants from receiving critical medical treatment. The Caris Foundation funded the construction of two TB/AIDs clinics in the area that were built by the Center for Infectious Disease Research of Zambia, an NGO sponsored by the University of Alabama Medical Center in Birmingham. The project includes the construction of a laboratory and ward at Muoyo, as well as a laboratory and outpatient care rooms at Mitete. After their completion, The Center for Disease Control, based in Atlanta, furnished and equipped these facilities.
