The Philippines is a stable democracy with modern cities, however in many rural areas and in the outer islands, there is still a great deal of poverty. To help those who would normally be unable to afford medical treatment, the Caris Foundation sponsored a clinic on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao. The clinic provided medical, dental and eye care to 2400 people in three days. Medical volunteers from the U.S. participated in the trip, and Caris also recruited volunteers from throughout the Philippines. Caris paid for food, lodging and travel expenses for the Filipino volunteers, as well as all needed medicines and supplies. The area around the clinic had recently suffered from a great deal of flooding caused by Typhoon Durian. Caris purchased a ton of rice which was distributed by boats and large trucks to residents isolated by the floodwaters.
