The difficult living conditions faced by people on the small Indonesian island of Nias was made even worse by the giant tsunami which struck in December of 2004. The increased focus from this event generated a study that revealed 90% of the 5500 blind people on the island had lost their sight due to cataracts. This is a common condition in the elderly that is reversible through surgery. The Caris Foundation has an ongoing program that brings doctors from the neighboring island of Sumatra to conduct eye surgery clinics. People come from all over the island, and many make long journeys over dangerous roads, so that they may see once again.
