Early-Infant HIV Diagnoses
Countrywide, Haiti

Haiti has the highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the western hemisphere. Children often bear the greatest burden of this disease due to the lack of medical infrastructure capable of providing resources to adequately diagnose and treat those infected. Because of the high risk of death before the age of two among HIV-infected children, early infant testing and diagnoses is essential to insure proper care. Caris has recently partnered with JHPIEGO, an international health organization affiliated with The Johns Hopkins University, to provide PCR HIV DNA testing for infants in nine sites strategically located nationwide where antiretroviral treatment is available. The ability to provide this valuable resource is a major step in laying the foundation to properly care for infants exposed to HIV in Haiti.
