New Medical Facility
Chichicastenango, Guatemala

Chichicastenango is a small village nestled in the mountains about a three hour drive heading northwest from Guatemala City. It has been a trading center for the Mayan people since pre-Hispanic times, and the marketplace is still a showcase for native Indian culture. Despite the busy marketplace, most of the indigenous people in this area still live in poverty. The World Health Organization reports that "Life expectancy among the Maya of Guatemala is 17 years shorter than for non-indigenous population groups," and is also "the lowest in Central America."

The Caris Foundation has provided funding that enabled Health Talents International, of Birmingham, Alabama, to construct Clinica Caris, a base clinic located near Chichicastenango in the heart of the Mayan population. In the spring of 2007, construction was completed and opening ceremonies were held for this clinic that houses a pharmacy, laboratory, dental facilities, and offices. It also serves as a referral center for patients requiring more thorough care.
