Shelter for Street Children
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

In Addis Ababa, the Bright Hope Organization operates a foster care program that places orphans with families. But for older, more troubled boys who have lived much of their lives on the street, it is harder to find homes that will accept them. Not wanting to give up on these teenagers, Bright Hope has been providing accomadations for about 40 boys in a makeshift shelter where they can sleep safely at night and receive three meals a day. There is also a two year program to help provide them with a better future. In the first six months, they learn the basics of how to live in society as respectable citizens. The next year and a half are spent learning a trade, such as shoe or shirt making. After completing the program, the boys venture out on their own in groups of 5 or 6 to begin a business and live productive lives. Until now, the program's shelter had been a temporary one on rented land. But recently, the Ethiopian government donated a parcel of land, and the Caris Foundation has funded the construction of a two story concrete building that will serve the organization and the street children for years to come.
