Foster Care Program
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

In the capitol city of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, many orphans live destitute lives in the city slums. These kids have little future, yet for just a dollar a day, their lives can be turned around. The Caris Foundation is funding 200 orphans through a foster care program administered by The Bright Hope Organization. In this program, each orphan lives with a family and attends school regularly, while receiving food, clothing and medical care. Progress is followed by four social workers who visit the children each week. The Bright Hope program also provides training to the children's new families so they can start their own small businesses. The community benefits as well, by awareness programs that stress the rights and needs of children, the danger of AIDs, and the benefits of traditional values, such as abstinence until marriage and respect for the elderly. Other community activities include initiatives to clear away garbage and clean up neighborhoods.
