Ecuador is a South American country with very rugged and diverse terrain in a relatively small geographical area. There is a coastal region along the Pacific Ocean, mountains that reach altitudes of 14,000 feet, and tropical rain forest in the Amazon Basin. The formidable landscape makes it difficult for those living in poverty to access regular medical treatment, so the Caris Foundation sponsored Dr. Bailey, a retired Doctor of Dental Medicine, on several medical, dental and eye clinics to various parts of the country. These clinics were conducted in the capitol city of Quito, as well as the remote villages of Pedro Vincinte and Maldonado. It is not uncommon for the clinics to draw crowds of over 2000, even in small villages.
