Chinese children born with birth defects, such as cleft lips, face a lifetime of hardship. If they are not abandoned, they may still be shunned by people in the rural, less educated areas where the deformity is not understood. The Caris Foundation has funded surgeries for children with cleft lips and cleft palates within the area of Xian, China. In many situations, they hire local surgeons who work along side volunteers from the US. This helps bolster the local Chinese medical community while providing them with an opportunity to exchange medical techniques.
