In an effort to control its huge population, China has limited families to only one child. This can cause problems for those living in poverty, because they depend on their children to support them when they grow old. If their only child has a serious birth defect, it can become a lifelong burden to the family. For this reason, parents sometimes abandon young children who are born with a deformity. To help prevent this, the Caris Foundation has funded cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries for young children living in Louyang, China.
